AGRICYGEN organized a Workshop under Climate Change 2018 Conference

The International Summit-Conference “Climate Change in the Mediterranean and the Middle East: Challenges and Solutions”, on the 18th and 19th May 2018, addressed the scientific basis of Climate Change in the region, its various impacts and challenges (Health, Water, Food, Tourism, Migration…), mitigation/adaptation strategies, policy challenges and governance.
The overall goal of the Summit-Conference was to launch a “Nicosia Declaration” regarding the scientific basis of Climate Change in the region, including the high-level propositions for mitigation/ adaptation strategies.
The Conference was organized by The Cyprus Institute and performed under the Aegis of the President of the Republic of Cyprus.
The Eastern Mediterranean Middle East (EMME) region faces alarming consequences from Climate Change, according to data analyses and model predictions, hence making mitigation and adaptation measures urgent. The region, which is home to nearly 500 million people of diverse socioeconomic and cultural backgrounds, accounts for about 50% of the world’s fossil fuel reserves, and is troubled by persistent conflicts.
On the 18th and 19th of May 2018, The Cyprus Institute hosted the International Conference “Climate Change in the Mediterranean and the Middle East: Challenges and Solutions”, which took place at the “Filoxenia” Conference Centre. The Event was organised under the Aegis of the President of the Republic of Cyprus, H.E. Mr. Nicos Anastasiades, as well as with the Support of the Representation of the European Commission in Cyprus.
In conjunction with the Climate Change conference, two pre-conference workshops were organized, in order for delegates to have the opportunity to go in depth in specific themes of importance for climate change in Cyprus and abroad. One such workshop was organized by the AGRICYGEN project partners and featured some high-level attendances. This workshop took place on the 17th May 2018, and had the title: “Agriculture and Animal Husbandry in a Changing Climate”.
During the Workshop, the AGRICYGEN research activities that aim at addressing and mitigating the climate change effects on agriculture and animal husbandry were presented, along with interesting cutting edge research results from AGRICYGEN and non-AGRICYGEN scientists in Cyprus and abroad.
The presentations covered three thematic areas, linked to the project:
- Genomics and breeding in a changing climate, covering both animals and plants,
- Crop production in a changing environment and
- Soil microecology and greenhouse gas emissions.
