The University of Edinburgh (UEDIN) is one of the largest and most successful universities in the UK with an International reputation as a centre of academic excellence. Almost all members of staff at the University are research active. The University of Edinburgh’s International character is reflected in its student population, which comprises of 3,637 European students and 7,285 International students (out of a total population of around 30,000 students) from over 120 different countries worldwide. It can also be found in its truly International staff and in its joint research and other links with overseas universities, institutes, companies and governments. On a European level, traditionally the University has been very successful in participating in European Framework Programmes. This success continued during the Seventh Framework Programme (FP7) with the University collaborating in approx. 237 projects, with a total award value of approximately €122M. The quality of the University of Edinburgh is reflected in its recent ranking as 19th in the world (QS World Rankings 2016-17).

The Roslin Institute is a part of the College of Medicine and Veterinary Medicine of the University of Edinburgh. It is a National Institute of Biosciences which receives Institute Strategic Programme Grant funding from the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council. The Institute undertakes research focussed on the health and welfare of animals, and applications of basic animal sciences in human and veterinary medicine, the livestock industry and food security. With dedicated knowledge transfer and public engagement teams, Roslin has an excellent track record in the dissemination of results and transfer of knowledge to industry to ensure maximum impact from its research. The Roslin Institute has recently attracted funding for three major initiatives: the formation of an Agri-Tech Centre for Innovation Excellence in Livestock, the Centre for Tropical Livestock Genetics & Health, and Roslin Technologies Ltd. via equity investment to aid translation of our research. All these initiatives advance our core goal of sustainable intensification of farm animal production in the UK and low- and middle-income countries to enhance societal and economic prosperity.
