CyI | The Cyprus Institute

The Cyprus Institute (CYI) is a non-profit research and educational institution with a strong scientific and technological orientation. It is an issue oriented institution, emphasizing international collaborations and cross-disciplinary research and post graduate education. CYI is being developed by establishing research centres which address challenging problems that are important at both the regional and international levels. The Cyprus Institute has three research Centres, the Energy, Environment and Water Research Centre (EEWRC), the Science and Technology in Archaeology Research Centre (STARC) and the Computation-based Science and Technology Research Centre (CaSToRC).

 

The three research centres are developed in partnership with leading institutions in their respective thematic areas. The mission of the CYI High Performance Computing Facility (HPCF) is to provide ICT services and support the activities of CYI and its Research Centres. The HPCF provides computing and data resources to the research community of Cyprus and the Eastern Mediterranean region and is becoming established as the de facto national supercomputing facility for Cyprus. It is also the mission of the HPCF to assist CYI in collaborating and providing ICT services to the national and regional/international academic research communities, and in certain cases to the public and private sectors. The HPCF works closely, under formal agreements, with world-class supercomputing facilities, such as the NCSA (U. of Illinois, USA) and the Juelich Supercomputing Centre (Germany) for knowledge exchange and joint research. Over the last few years, having served hundreds of projects from several neighbouring countries (Israel, Egypt, Greece, Jordan, Lebanon, Turkey), the Facility has had a major impact, being the first open-access supercomputing facility in the region.

 

The Facility also serves the Cyprus Ministry of Agriculture Meteorology Service by providing the compute and storage capacity for the daily weather forecast. In addition to user support, the Facility offers deployment, integration and optimization services, such as aiding in the optimization of processing pipelines for efficient use of compute and storage resources (e.g. in Next Generation Sequencing, climate modelling, and bioinformatics). The Facility participates in PRACE (the pan-European supercomputing infrastructure), and has been instrumental in the implementation of LinkSceem (lead by CYI) and Vi-SEEM regional projects.
